ANNUAL REVIEW OF PERFORMANCE OF INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS OF TENURED ACADEMIC STAFF
INSTITUTE OF ADVANCED STUDIES

Report by R. SYLVAN ( Department of Philosophy, RSSS)

for the period 1981-4 inclusive

1. Research conducted and future plans for research
My research has ranged over a wide area in philosophy — metaphysics, logic,
philosophy of science, ethics, social and political theory, extending to
environmental concerns. My work overlaps the three areas upon which research in
the Philosophy Department, RSSS, concentrates: logic; metaphysics and epistemo
logy; and social and political theory. The work extends into other disciplines
as well, in an examination of their fundamental assumptions. For example, my
current work includes the metaphysical principles in cosmology, realism and
relativism in science, and the philosophical assumptions of economics.
This
philosophical investigation of the foundations of other disciplines is a
research trend which is likely to increase.

Uy research over the next few years will also include certain large projects,
already underway. These include a treatise on anarchism, which will likely be
several years in preparation, and an in-depth work on process theory and nondeductive logics with particular emphasis on nonmonotonic logics relevant to
computing and information processing.
